Probiotics are foods rich in live microorganisms that help maintain "good bacteria"in the body. They are found in fermented foods, and sometimes certain conditions necessitate taking probiotic supplements. Prebiotics are foods that act as food for the gut bacteria. They then produces substances like short chain fatty acids that have far reaching effects throughout the body. We are becoming more and more aware of the importance of gut bacteria to overall health and well-being and we should do everything we can to maintain it.
Lutein is one of the most prevalent yellow colored carotenoid in nature. Together with zeaxanthin it is highly concentrated in the macula of the eye where it protects it from blue light, light oxidation and improves visual performance. Recently, interest in lutein has expanded beyond the eye to its possible contribution to brain development and function. In this article, we explore how might it be beneficial to the brain.
